Officials asked to care for people in difficulty

An executive meeting of China's State Council held on Tuesday asked governments at various levels to take care of the people, especially "people in difficulty", during the Spring Festival period.

Government leaders should go to the grass-roots, the countryside, enterprises and urban communities, especially where there are difficulties, to learn about the lives of the masses and help them solve their real difficulties, according to the meeting chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao.

It called for advocating proper consumption concepts and consumption styles and opposing conspicuous consumption.

It asked government officials to maintain integrity and curb various sorts of corruption, including using public money to pay for dinners, entertainment and gifts.

The meeting also called on various localities to enrich people's cultural activities during the Spring Festival period.

During his work safety inspection in Beijing, State Councilor Hua Jianmin urged leading officials at different levels to seriously study and implement Premier Wen Jiabao's instructions on the issue, so as to ensure a happy and peaceful Spring Festival, the traditional Chinese Lunar New Year which falls on January 29 this year.

Hua visited the General Administration of Civil Aviation of China (CAAC) offices and the Beijing Western Railway Station, which are expected to transport a huge number of passengers during the week-long national holiday.
