5 foreign experts win S&T co-op award

On March 24, State Councilor Chen Zhili presented the 2005 China International Scientific and Technological Cooperation Award to five foreign experts on behalf of the Chinese Government. The winners of the award were Dr. Wolf-Dieter Dudenhausen, Dr. Evert Jacobsen, Dr. Mu-ming Poo, Dr. Neville Agnew and Dr. David G. Evans. Xu Guanhua, minister of science and technology delivered an address and Cheng Jinpei, Vice Minister of Science and Technology presided over the award ceremony.

These five prizewinners are world-renowned experts and scholars, who have in the last 10 years, carried out vigorous cooperation with Chinese scientific and technical counterparts in the fields of information technology, biotechnology, preservation of cultural relics and chemical engineering technology.

Devoted to China-Germany S&T cooperation in information technology, Dr. Dudenhausen has helped 500 enterprises and research institutions of both countries establish cooperative relationships and facilitated the founding of the China-Germany Computational Biology Institute. Professor Jacobsen, an expert in gene engineering, initiated the international potato genomic sequencing program and invited the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences to be the first international copartner. Implementation of this program upgraded China's research in potato molecular genetics and breeding to world advanced level. Dr. Mu-ming Poo is a well-known international nerve biologist. In 1999, he became the first foreign director of the Institute of Neuroscience, Chinese Academy of Sciences and has successfully set up a new type of basic research institute for China. As one of the earliest foreign experts participating in the project for preservation of Chinese cultural heritage, Dr. Agnew has carried out preservation research successively in Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, Yungang Grottoes and Chengde Mountain Resort.

With the assistance of Professor David G. Evans, an expert in inorganic chemistry, the Chinese research and development personnel have obtained 5 international leading results in the field of chemical engineering technology, which have already been put into mass production.

It is reported that altogether 45 foreign experts have received this award since the first presentation of this award in 1995.
