Forest coverage hits 15% in Xinjiang oasis

Recently, journalists have learned from the Xinjiang Greening Committee that, in the past 5 years, Xinjiang's forest coverage in oasis has increased from 12% to 14.95%. The eco-environment improved obviously. Xinjiang is a region with the largest and most land desertification area in China.

During the 10th 5-year plan period, Xinjiang accumulatively completed the afforestation on 1.815 mln hectares. Twenty-two cities, urban areas and counties were named as garden cities in Xinjiang. Among them, Shihezi and Korla were named as national garden cities. Burqin County was named as a national garden county. Eighty-one counties and cities, as well as 134 regiment farms, instituted a farmland shelterbelt system. Forty-five counties and cities met the plain greening standard. And 93% of the farmland was under the protection of shelterbelt.
