The foreign investment environment will not be affected in China if Google pulls out, a Chinese spokesman said in Beijng Tuesday.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang made the remarks regarding Google's possible exit from the China market at a regular news briefing.

Google, the world's largest Internet search engine, claimed in January it was considering leaving China because of censoring requirements and alleged hacker attacks. Google's vice president Nicole Wong said last week that the company was "prepared" to leave the country.

"As to the impact of Google's possible retreat, it is only an individual business's action which will not affect the investment environment in China, " said Qin.

Qin said that if Google quits, it would not change the fact that most foreign enterprises, including American ones, were operating well and making good profits in China.

Relevant Chinese government departments have kept frequent exchanges with international Internet operators, said Qin, "We emphasize that any businesses operating in China, whether they are domestic ones or from overseas, shall abide by Chinese laws."
