Zhou, the CPC Central Political and Legislative Affairs Committee secretary, made the remarks during a meeting with Portuguese Justice Minister Alberto Costa.

Zhou said China and Portugal had made progress in political, economic and cultural exchanges since they forged diplomatic ties 30 years ago.

China and Portugal have signed and ratified three treaties on criminal judicial assistance, extradition, and transfer of sentenced persons.

Zhou, also member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, said China's economy had grown rapidly over the past three decades, but gaps remained between the urban and rural areas, and between economic and social development.

He said in building a socialist country ruled by law with Chinese characteristics, China has implemented the strategy of rule of law, strengthened legal education for the public and learning from other countries in legal system construction.

Costa said China was playing an increasingly important role in the world economy, and Portugal would promote cooperation with China.
